Apply to Counsel
Serving, as a counselor at a Christian youth camp may be one of the most rewarding activities you will do in your lifetime. You will have the opportunity to impact others in significant, perhaps even life-changing ways.
The goal of FPYC is to help each camper grow…by having fun, making friends, being introduced to the teachings of Jesus Christ and to experience grace, kindness, and acceptance from others in a way to help them develop socially, spiritually and physically.
The counselor role can be extremely challenging and will require dedication and commitment to the mission of the camp. But you will not be alone, as the FPYC board, and specifically the staffing committee, session directors and the camp caretakers are there to help support you in this work.
The basic job description is to:
- Help kids have fun while keeping them safe physically and emotionally by providing direct supervision and involvement in their camp experience
- Help create a safe environment for kids to ‘be themselves’ and to form solid and lasting friendships
- Help facilitate an environment that encourages introduction to and further development of faith in God
- Know where your campers are at all times when they are not directly in your view
- Maintain a positive attitude and excellent example while organizing, participating and overseeing various activities designed to support the camp mission
- Practice self-care throughout the summer to maintain good mental, physical and emotional health to be able to handle what can be a very challenging role
- Follow and uphold the ‘rules for campers’ which are also in place to help carry out the camp mission and create the best possible environment
Counselors are expected to be present from Sunday late afternoon of counselor training into the evening of the last Saturday of camp. See the schedule for specific dates. Time off can be granted for special circumstances, and counselors may have the option of taking a week off depending on size of the sessions.
Pay is $300 per week, with an additional $25 per week for those who become lifeguard certified. Returning counselors also would receive another $50 per week. (Lifeguard certification training will be reimbursed for those selected as counselors who pursue this).
